A NOTE FROM OUR SUPERINTENDENT

Richard Stokes

The following is an excerpt from an electronic address to all the teachers within the Carson City School District. Mr. Stokes was expressing his gratitude for all educators during Teacher Appreciation Week, May 6-10.

“…As I think of you collectively, I recognize and honor all of you for the roles you play as teachers. I have worked in our District now for 18 years and feel I know your hearts. I hear of your selfless acts every day. I know of the time, talent and treasure that you freely offer to your students that is merely a part of the breadth, depth, and width of your influence. I observe you giving up a Saturday to improve a school's wetland classroom. I see you applying for and earning mini-grants to supplement and enrich the activities in your classrooms. I hear the gratitude in students' voices who appreciate your willingness to supervise a new volleyball club or sponsor a Super Smash Brothers (video game) club. I hear from appreciative families who receive meals or calls of support and care as you attempt to ease the suffering or sorrow in their lives. I hear from your supervisors, colleagues, and citizens of the thousands of selfless acts that the staff in our District perform. There is no doubt that by doing what you love, your students hear your voice and see you as one of the individuals in their lives that has influenced them for good. You have stirred their emotions. You have instilled virtues and ideals. You have challenged their thinking. You have provided safety and care where maybe they can't find it elsewhere. You have encouraged and expanded eager minds, bodies, and spirits in ways that you may never fully comprehend. You are their teacher. Thank you for your work this year and always. I wish each of you a pleasant and happy end to the current school year.”

With Sincere Appreciation and Gratitude,
Richard Stokes, superintendent, Carson City School District

ELEMENTARYS SCHOOLS HELP TRANSITION PRE-K STUDENTS TO KINDERGARTEN

KindergartenElementary schools in the Carson City School District are hosting individual school site welcome events this week for all transitioning preschoolers. The events are designed for students and parents to tour their new school, meet teachers and administrators and build on the fun and excitement about going to school.

Pre-K“The transition into kindergarten is important to young learners in providing confidence and dispelling ‘first-day-of-school’ fears,” said Assistant Director of Student Support Services Christine Lenox, Ph.D. “We want to help them feel as welcome and comfortable as possible. If the new students know who their teacher may be, which hallway they need to travel down and where their classroom is, the tension and stress preceding the start of school subsides immensely.”

The events offer raffle prizes and an opportunity to have any questions answered. Click here for more information about school locations, dates and times of each event.

NUTRITION PROGRAM UPDATES SET FOR THE 2019-2020 SCHOOL YEAR

NutritionThe Carson City School District’s Nutrition Department will work over the summer to implement a new point-of-service system and online nutrition program portal. The current online payment method goes through MyPaymentsPlus, but starting this fall, all food related payments will be through the Titan Family Portal at titank12.com

BananasAll existing balances will automatically roll over into Titan beginning July 9, 2019, so as far as the child is concerned, it will be like nothing has changed. Applications for free and reduced meal status may also be completed through the Titan Family Portal. Unlike the district’s current system, parents and families will be able to apply online as many times as they need to throughout the year. The Titan family portal ensures user-friendliness. Through the new portal, parents and families will be able to set up an account to manage their child’s nutrition account, get low balance notifications and much more.
Nutrition
Did you know most of what students eat when they order hot lunch is cooked from scratch? The school district has partnered with Aramark for many years now. Aramark crafts nutritious menus with many cooked-from-scratch options. For more information regarding the new portal, please contact Elizabeth Snyder, director of Nutrition, 775-283-2150.

INTERVIEW WITH EXPERTS! STUDENTS PRODUCE ENERGY EFFICIENCY VIDEO

Student VideoStudents at Empire Elementary School had an educational opportunity to interview computer technology experts with the Carson City School District's Department of Innovation and Technology. They were able to inquire about energy efficiency topics like "Should teachers turn their computers off at the end of the day?" The video was created solely by the students under the supervision of Ms. Nancy Cole, third grade teacher at Empire Elementary.
Student Video
According to a U.S. Department of Energy report, money spent on fueling a school exceeds the money spent on salaries, supplies and books. Annually, schools spend in excess of $6 billion on energy alone, a cost that could be cut by 25% with better energy-saving initiatives. The Carson City School District is considered the most energy efficient in Nevada, on a utility cost per student basis.
