Kindergarten is the first formal step in a child's education, and the skills and abilities that they bring can greatly affect their future academic success.

Being ready for kindergarten means that a child has developed a certain level of independence including social, emotional, and physical skills that are necessary to succeed in a classroom setting. These skills include things like basic letters and numbers, the ability to follow instructions, how to communicate with others and how to work well in a group.

“Children who are not fully prepared for kindergarten may struggle to keep up with their peers, which can lead to frustration, low self-esteem and a dislike of school,” said Merri Pray, Teacher on Special Assignment, Professional Learning & Family Engagement Coordinator for the Carson City School District. “By making sure that your child is kindergarten ready, you are giving them the best possible start to their educational journey. This means that they are more likely to be engaged and motivated learners. It is important that parents take an active role in their child's early learning and work with them to help them acquire the skills they need to succeed in Kindergarten and beyond.”

The 8-day program (June 12-27, Monday through Wednesdays, 8:30-11:45 a.m.) will focus on kindergarten readiness and will allow parents and teachers to discuss school readiness and activities to help children be “Ready to Rock Kinder.”

The kindergarten readiness program will begin Thursday, June 8, 2023, with a Parent and Me’ Kick-off where parents will experience the first day of the readiness program with their student. At the conclusion of the program, Parent Teacher Conferences will be held June 28 and 29 to discuss and support school readiness. Space for the summer program is limited. To reserve a spot for a student planning to attend Kindergarten this year, please sign up at the school the child will attend.

Students MUST be registered at a Carson City School District school prior to attending the readiness program. Bus transportation may be available. Daily snack will be provided. Readiness reports and activities to help children be “Ready to Rock Kinder” will be provided at the parent teacher conferences.
